Waking with a major headache and upset stomach isn't a recipe for success, especially not when the assignment is to drive to a corner of Luxembourg, and then follow a marathon race for two and a half hours; mostly in the cold of the upcoming winter that is already creeping in. The pictures came out alright however - mostly - so the morning wasn't a complete loss.

It rained all afternoon long during this assignment; and I was glad to have brought my rainproofjacket, an umbrella and additional rain gear for my camera and lens. I think I got most essential shots, but by the time the relays were over my feet and legs were soaked to the skin and I was more than ready to head home.

For this event, I had been asked to cover the start and the finish of the races for the sports section of the newspaper, and also provide some additional shots for the local pages. Unfortunately, with the start and the finish being relatively close together, and the route not offering any shortcuts to get back to the finish line fast, I didn't get all the photo opportunities I'd been hoping for. I did get one or two nice sunset shots and would have had more success panning slow exposures if there hadn't been so many finishers walking to their cars, and always straight through my shots.

I'm becoming painfully aware that I need another professional camera body - inbetween the 300mm and the 70-200mm, I was forced to switch lenses entirely too often. I still managed to get all the shots that I wanted, with one or two exceptions.

There were only two Luxembourgish athletes competing in the races of the seniors, and the newspaper had primarily sent me to cover David Fiegen, who ran the 800m and managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in this race. Since he won't be running any more races in proximity of Luxembourg, I also shot some additional pictures that are useful for previews and reports.
